At first, all my puppy did was whine, but after about three months, she started to bark! Not a very loud or even convincing bark, and in a way it was cute, but it did get louder and louder. And louder! Here´s how I stopped her!
Barking is what puppies are supposed to do, especially after three to four months, so there was nothing to worry about. However, you don´t want your pooch howling the night away! If your puppy is barking all day, even when it´s not "protecting it´s territory" it is probably lonely or bored.
Best 9 steps to stop puppies barking!
- Wear her out. A little. When a puppy barks, it is often because it simply has too much energy. Walkies help! Even if your pooch (like mine) is not a very keen walker, walk around the block a bit.
- Don´t reward her when she´s misbehaving! Ignore puppy when she´s barking, don´t pay any attention to her and the fun will wear off. If you respond every time she barks, she´ll get the wrong message!
- Do reward good behaviour: f puppy´s nice and quiet, give her a treat or a cuddle!
- Playtime. Tiny puppies need company as much as we humans do! If you were stuck all day with nobody to talk to you´d go a bit mental, right? Well, puppies need to communicate as well. Go to the park, let her frolick around a bit with some other dogs.
- Alleviate boredom. Get your pup some nice toys. Especially things such as kongs and other clever toys with little treats hidden in it, are great to keep their minds occupied for a long time.
- More playtime: You too have to play with your puppy! Just giving her a lot of toys is not enough, interact. You don´t have to spend hours and hours, just a bit of fetch will do the trick!
- Obedience. Your puppy may not look as if she´s looking for an intellectual challenge, but it´s very good for them. Training her in obedience is a wonderfull way: train her to fetch, stay, sit. Or something that´s just between the two of you, like stand on three legs. It´ll be fun for both of you!
- Remember, it´s supposed to be FUN, don´t get frustrated, because it will only make your pup confused! Never shout at the pup! Take a deep breath and walk away.
